Vacuum Technician (TE-VSC-IVO-2024-33-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

With a total of 130 km of vacuum vessel, CERN operates one of the largest vacuum systems in the world. Are you ready to operate such a system, in particular the sections operating at cryogenic temperatures and those injecting proton beams in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC)?  Are you interested in pursuing developments in materials and treatments for thermal insulation of cryogenic fluids with potential applications beyond particle accelerators? Then come and join the Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group! Take part!

The Vacuum, Surfaces and Coatings Group is responsible for all high and ultra-high vacuum systems for the CERN accelerators. Its mandate covers all activities from development to operation, including design, production and procurement, surface engineering and analysis, acceptance tests, control and monitoring. The Insulation & Injector Vacuum Operation section (IVO) takes care of the operation and upgrade of vacuum systems that are essential for CERN accelerators, including those of cryostats of superconducting magnets and those of the Large-Hadron-Collider (LHC) injection chain. The IVO section is also active in knowledge transfer programmes involving industries and other laboratories.

Functions

Within the VSC Group of the TE Department, you will:

  • Carry out and organise operation, maintenance, repair, testing and modification of large vacuum systems for the LHC’s injectors and cryogenic equipment.
  • Fault-find and elaborate repair solutions for complex vacuum systems, either during normal operation or in on-call service.
  • Prepare and perform acceptance tests of vacuum equipment, interpret and report results by means of written documentation.
  • Manufacture mechanical components, including prototypes, and seek new construction techniques and ways of using new vacuum materials and treatments.
  • Prepare documentation for the manufacture, assembly, installation, and use of vacuum equipment, including orders with internal services and external contractors.

Qualifications

Higher technical diploma or equivalent relevant experience in the field of vacuum technology and mechanical fabrication. or a related field.

Experience:

  • Proven experience in design, installation, maintenance, and operation of ultrahigh vacuum equipment.
  • Proven experience in leak detection techniques and equipment
  • Demonstrated experience in mechanical fabrication and interpretation of 2D technical drawings.
  • Experience in the use of vacuum instrumentation would be an asset.

Technical competencies:

  • Installation and commissioning of vacuum systems
  • Design and analysis of high-vacuum systems
  • Knowledge and application of leak detection techniques and equipment
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation

Behavioural competencies:

  • Working in Teams: working well in groups and readily fitting into a team; participating fully and taking an active role in team activities
  • Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them Finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available
  • Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements
  • Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind Delivering high quality work on time and fulfilling expectations
