The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2100 people.

For the Applied Catalysis and Spectroscopy Group we are looking for aPhD StudentIn heterogeneous catalysisYour tasksYour project is part of a broader research program aiming at exploring novel routes for the production of jet fuels from small intermediate molecules such as methane and methanol. In this context, your work will focus on discovering heterogeneous catalysts based on zeolites and ion exchanged zeolites to prepare selectively the C4 hydrocarbon fraction from methanol, dimethyl ether and uncover structure-activity relationships. You will prepare zeolite-based catalysts, use state-of-the-art methods including in-situ experiments to characterize their structure and design an experimental setup for catalytic testing. You will interact actively with your colleagues at PSI and within the research program aiming at the production of jet fuels. PSI will be your working place but you will be registered as a PhD Student at the ETH Zurich and Prof. Dr Jeroen van Bokhoven will be your academic supervisor.Your profile

  • Master degree or equivalent in chemistry, chemical engineering, material science or a related field

  • Knowledge of material science, physical chemistry and catalysis

  • Experience in zeolite chemistry, material preparation and with analytical methods (gas chromatography etc.) is an asset

  • Enjoy practical work using advanced instrumentation and like to conduct research in a team

  • Very good communication skills in English complete your application profile

We offerOur institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and our pronounced vocational training culture.
