Clinical PhD position in Nephrology 100 %

The Department of Nephrology and Hypertension at the Inselspital Bern, Switzerland is seeking to immediately hire a PhD candidate for a clinical PhD in Health Sciences. In your PhD you will be able to pursue a clinical career in Nephrology and conduct patient-oriented research in 50:50 model.
Period: Contract for 4 years, start as soon as possible
Kidney stones are the most common condition affecting the kidney, and effective preventive measures are an undisputed medical need. Thiazide and thiazide-like diuretics (“thiazides”) have been the cornerstone of pharmacologic recurrence prevention. We recently demonstrated in the large NOSTONE trial that the most widely prescribed and best studied thiazide, hydrochlorothiazide, is not effectively preventing kidney stone recurrence. If these results also apply to the two more potent and long-acting thiazide-like diuretics indapamide and chlorthalidone is currently unknown. No head-to-head comparison of different thiazides for prevention of kidney stone recurrence has ever been performed. We will now address this critical knowledge gap in the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF)-funded INDAPACHLOR trial.
