Post-doctoral researcher

bacterial physiology at the single-cell level

The Biozentrum of the University of Basel is one of the leading Life Sciences Institutes in the world. It accommodates 30 research groups and 500 employees investigating how molecules and cells create life, spanning the scale from atom to organism. Founded in 1971, the Biozentrum has been the birthplace of many fundamental discoveries in biology and medicine, spawning several Nobel Laureates.

A postdoc position is available in the group of Prof. Marek Basler at the Biozentrum, University of Basel.

Infectious diseases are a major worldwide health concern. Current therapies have become increasingly inefficient because of emerging antimicrobial resistance, while the pipeline of new drugs is drying up. To avoid a public health emergency, the entire antibiotic research community must work together to reinvigorate research into new antibiotics. The available position will be part of the new Swiss National Centre of Competence in Research "AntiResist" that focuses its efforts on understanding the physiology of key bacterial pathogens in human patients, and mimicking relevant conditions in tissue culture models to identify new and innovative antimicrobial strategies. We collaborate with multi-national groups from academia, hospitals, and industry.

Your position

To develop innovative approaches to visualize, analyze and understand changes in physiology of bacterial pathogens at the single-cell level upon treatment with antimicrobials or during interactions with other cells.

Your profile

You obtained PhD in one of the following disciplines: microbiology, biophysics, or image analysis. You have a profound interest in bacterial physiology and in the development and use of single-cell analysis methods based on live-cell imaging and image analysis. Having a personal experience with advanced imaging techniques, single-cell reporters, machine learning-based image analysis or microfluidics would be of great advantage.

We offer you

Our multidisciplinary group includes microbiologists and structural biologists with an expertise in live-cell imaging, analysis of cell-cell interactions, and understanding of mechanisms involved in the assembly and regulation of a dynamic bacterial nanomachine (a list of recent publications is here). We have an excellent support from various core facilities with expert staff as well as our own state-of-the art equipment, including a super-resolution microscope.
Basel is an international city with people from 150 nations. Located on the border where three countries meet - Switzerland-Germany- France -, it is Europe's most important life sciences hub. Basel provides a high standard of living and a rich and varied cultural atmosphere.

The project starts from September 2020 and the funding is available for at least 4 years.
