The World Council of Churches (WCC) is an ecumenical fellowship of churches founded in 1948. It brings together 350 member churches from all over the world, including Orthodox churches, Anglican, Baptist, Lutheran and Reformed denominations, to promote Christian unity in faith, witness and service for a just and peaceful world. 

 

The WCC is looking for a

Programme Executive for Peace-Building in the African Region

OBJECTIVE: t o promote and strengthen relations with churches and ecumenical organizations in Africa, and with other relevant partners, for the purposes of peace-building and related initiatives, focusing on identified priority countries.

 

  

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Promote and deepen relations with WCC member churches, ecumenical organizations and networks in Africa to address situations of conflict, suffering and injustice.
  • Encourage and enable the churches most directly affected by conflict to speak for themselves, to interpret their situation, and to be listened to as authentic local voices.
  • Create ecumenical awareness and understanding of the advocacy goals of ecumenical partners and related opportunities for peace building.
  • Convene and facilitate ecumenical forums and consultations pertaining to critical issues in this field.
  • Ensure that WCC’s commitments with AACC and other partners on the work in Africa are implemented.
  • Liaise with Ecumenical partners who support the WCC strategic action in Africa.
  • Coordinate and prepare visits by the General Secretary to Africa (in close collaboration with the general secretariat) and ensure appropriate follow-up.
  • Contribute to the integration between activities related to peace-building in the African region and other relevant WCC activities and transversals.

   

QUALIFICATIONS AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Graduate and postgraduate qualifications in political science, international relations, theology or related field;
  • Three to five years of experience in an ecumenical or similar environment;
  • Proper insight to the life of the Churches in the region, as well as good understanding of the history and the political situation in the region;
  • Ability to establish relations of trust to many partners in Africa and worldwide that are working together with the WCC for just peace, for dialogue, and for accompaniment of the Churches.
  • Experience in dealing with intercultural and interreligious issues would be an asset.
  • Experience in project management, including result oriented planning, monitoring, evaluation, and reporting of projects;
  • Ability to communicate and write well. Flexibility, leadership, tact, and willingness to travel extensively.
  • Good command of written and spoken English. Knowledge of other WCC working languages is an advantage. In particular French, is a valuable added asset;
  • Information technology: Word, Excel, Internet, social media, etc…
