General description

The Centre for Trade and Economic Integration (CTEI) at the Graduate Institute, Geneva is looking for a Director for the new Platform on Societal Transformations (Transformations Platform), which will start operations on 1st of July 2020 and be hosted within CTEI.

The Transformations Platform

The world is experiencing several massive, simultaneous and confluent disruptions. Digitech and biotech technologies are disrupting the future of manufacturing, the future of work, the future of globalisation, and much more. Climate change and the exhaustion of natural resources are disordering traditional assumptions on everything from food production to international policy cooperation and coordination. The Covid pandemic – not the first and certainly not the last – has forced a rethinking all across the horizon of international cooperation. Social and economic inequality within and between nations is forcing an urgent need for a reconsidering the current social and economic operating modes.

Geneva hosts a unique and uniquely rich variety of actors and resources working on issues related to societal transformations that are being forced by these megatrends. But despite an immense potential for synergies and mutual leveraging of competencies, the whole is not much more than the sum of its parts. Moreover, the learnings tend to stay within traditional audiences.

The Transformations Platform will provide a common ground for joined-up thinking, collaborative reflective and research, and joint initiatives. The Platform will have an evolving mandate, with a first focus on the Future of Work.  The Platform will operate under the following principles: independent body; user-oriented approach; an open and inclusive space; representative arena; a flexible and evolving mandate; a reliable and responsible governance structure; full transparency. It will be a flexible, lean organisation with a mandate that evolves with bottom-up interests.

Ultimately, the Platform will aim to enhance and amplify the voice of Geneva-based actors on societal transformations, with a particular focus on change on the workplace. To do so, it will create synergies between the various actors working on societal transformation processes in Geneva and help to disseminate Geneva’s knowledge and know-how to relevant stakeholders globally.  The ‘business of the Platform’ can be thought of as coalescing around three pillars: Connect, Inform, and Innovate:

  • CONNECT: The Platform will provide a neutral platform that allows partners to meet, exchange, and collaborate. The Platform proposes to convene a series of dialogues each year in Geneva to bring together representatives of the public and private sectors, academia, and civil society; with particular emphasis on an annual summit.

  • INFORM The Platform will amplify Geneva-based stakeholder’s voice using online channels (web, social media) and a helpdesk service.

  • INNOVATE: The Platform will be a space for innovation. The Platform will act as an incubator, supporting the development of new initiatives, activities, research on possible future developments, etc.

Mission and activities

The Platform Director will take the lead in developing the potential of the Platform in close cooperation and support of CTEI Co-Director (Richard Baldwin), the President of Executive Education (Cedric Dupont) and the CTEI Managing Director (Tamara Pironnet). The Directorship is thus first and most a position where entrepreneurship, ambition, and leadership are critical along with network building skills.

The Platform Director will be in charge of overseeing the various activities, including overseeing the logistics of conferences and workshops and the development of communications material; identifying gaps and trends to address; developing and maintaining a broad network of stakeholders; guiding the direction of the newsletter and other material; and ensuring the financial management of the platform. S/he will also be responsible for fundraising for the activities.

  • Strategy development: Thinking creatively about what the cutting edge questions in the field of the future of work are and identifying gaps, trends and related priorities for the Platform to focus on across its events, research and incubation activities.
  • Networking: Developing and maintaining a broad network of stakeholders to engage as part of the Platform, including as implementing partners and collaborators. Convening interdisciplinary teams and stakeholders to address real world questions, etc.
  • Overseeing the core activities of the Platform: Coordinating day-to-day activities of the GTP, liaising closely with the CTEI Managing Director and the Platform Chairs (Baldwin and Dupont), filtering up priority information as appropriate. Overseeing the logistics of conferences, meetings, workshops, travels and other events of the Platform and ensuring regular update of the website and of the communication policy of the GTP. Revising and drafting communication materials of the Platform, including the newsletters and other related material.
  • Team management: Providing leadership to the Platform team: filtering down vision and goals, measuring progress, coordinating evaluations for staff, maintaining staff contracts and personal files, etc.
  • Fundraising and reporting: Fundraising for the activities of the Platform. Drafting the annual report of the Platform and, when appropriate, research project proposals, correspondence and any other documents in link with the activities of the Platform.
  • Managing the Platform’s accounts and finances: Managing day-to-day accounting operations (financial administration of research and mandated projects, payments and invoices to our partners, maintaining our accounts). Assisting in the preparation of the annual budget and tracking expenditures relative to the budget. Working with own bank, accountants, and auditors, etc. Tracking financial contributions and income related to mandated projects, including drafting financial reports for donors and maintaining a calendar of reporting deadlines and requirements and providing regular reports on income and contributions.
