 Eawag, the Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology, is an internationally networked aquatic research institute within the ETH Domain (Swiss Federal Institutes of Technology). Eawag conducts research, education and expert consulting to achieve the dual goals of meeting direct human needs for water and maintaining the function and integrity of aquatic ecosystems.The Sandec Department (Sanitation, Water and Solid Waste for Development) at Eawag is currently looking to fill the position for a new project Dewatering of Blackwater, the Missing Link for Integrated Off-Grid Solutions:Scientific Project Manager 100%

We are looking for a highly motivated and qualified individual to work on collaborative research together with the Process Engineering Department and the Water Hub project, which is part of the modular and innovative NEST research building. Globally, a better understanding of dewatering of blackwater and the treatment of the resulting liquid and solid streams are the missing links for sanitation in developing countries as well as for achieving fully closed loop or off grid solutions for the holistic management of wastewater streams.

The main tasks of this position include conducting applied research to develop knowledge of the dewatering of blackwater and the treatment of the resulting liquid and solid streams to levels required for integration in technology solutions; and to liaise with industry and implementation partners to fulfill their technology development needs for resource-recovery based solutions for closed-loop management of wastewater streams.


  • Test and adapt existing technologies for dewatering and resource recovery from the liquid and solid streams

  • Develop a toolbox of technology solutions for dewatering, solids treatment and liquid Treatment

  • Develop inline monitoring of blackwater for dosing of conditioners

  • Supervise students and interns in applied research projects

  • Develop and pursue new collaborations with industrial and implementation Partners

  • Communicate with stakeholders and project collaborators

  • Develop proposals for externally funded Research

  • Manage budget, operational and financial reports


  • A graduate degree in sanitary / environmental engineering, or related field

  • Experience with conducting laboratory scale Research

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team

  • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English

  • Knowledge of German and/or French desirable
