The Geneva Centre for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action (CERAH), a joint centre of the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, is dedicated to analysis and reflection on humanitarian action as well as training for professionals in the humanitarian field. To respond to the needs of humanitarian workers, the CERAH offers several accredited courses, drawing on Geneva’s network of international institutions and non- -governmental organisations.
In 2014, CERAH developed the Humanitarian Distance Learning (HDL) programme to offer modular, flexible and skill- -oriented continuing education courses for professionals working or seeking to work in the humanitarian sector, regardless of where in the world they are based. This programme includes an 8- -month distance- -learning Certificate of Advanced Studies “Designing Strategies and Projects for Humanitarian Action” (10 ECTS Credits). This certificate (including two residential weeks in Uganda) aims to reinforce the knowledge and skills necessary to confront current challenges faced by humanitarian actors working in complex environments.
The course emphasizes adaptive and flexible strategies and projects, focusing on participants’ working situations and enabling reflection on their current practice throughout learning. It is designed for humanitarian/development managers, currently employed as project manager or in higher functions in local, national, international organizations, and is delivered in partnership with a network of leading international humanitarian organizations. The course is based on an innovative pedagogical approach, focusing on problem- -solving in professional realities. It is delivered by two coordinators in collaboration with are expected to deliver online courses, provide structured feedback, mentor students through tutoring and coaching. Two residential weeks in Uganda are dedicated to proceed with further learning: participant deepen their knowledge on the topics seen so far through experience sharing and collaborative work on project management for a local NGO in Jinja.
