The University of Basel has an international reputation of outstanding achievements in research and teaching. Founded in 1460, the University of Basel is the oldest university in Switzerland and has a history of success going back over 550 years.

The Europainstitut / Institute for European Global Studies of the University of Basel, founded in 1993, analyses the relationships of Switzerland and Europe in a globally connected world through research and teaching.

As an interdisciplinary institution, it combines expertise from political science, economics, philosophy, history and law. With its MA and PhD programs in European Global Studies, it offers an innovative interdisciplinary and internationally oriented academic education.

The Europainstitut of the University of Basel (https://www.europa.unibas.ch) is searching for a doctoral candidate in the field of global history (under the supervision of Professor Ralph Weber), starting on 1 September 2024 (or a start date by prior agreement).

Your position

  • Write a thesis in the context of the project "Historical Perspectives on Comparative Philosophy: A Digital Humanities Mapping Approach and Paul Masson-Oursel as Nodal Point for a Global History," funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) and focusing on the French philosopher Paul Masson-Oursel (1882-1956) and his work on comparative philosophy against the background of earlier discussions on the topic in India, particularly by Brajendra Nath Seal (1864-1938) and Virchand Raghavji Gandhi (1864-1901).
  • Participation in the project activities, organization of workshops and readiness to do field work in France and India.
  • Active engagement with the interdisciplinary activities of the Institute (e.g. presentation of your research at Institute events) as well as with activities related to the academic administration of the Institute.

Your profile

  • Candidates should have a Master's degree in Philosophy with strong historiographical interests or in History with strong philosophical interests.
  • You are collegial and open-minded, work well independently, have a talent for organization as well as English (written and spoken) and French (reading) proficiency. Excellent reading knowledge of Bengali, Gujarati and/or Hindi is desirable.
  • You are proficient with MS Office.
  • You can maintain your focus in the context of a lively Institute environment, and are willing and able to adapt your work schedule to the academic calendar.
