Global R&D Material Compliance Engineer (f/m/d)


Within the Hitachi Energy Transformers business unit we are looking for a Global R&D Materials Engineer to join us within one of our Technology Centers. You will support our global teams in assuring the materials and chemicals used in our products and manufacturing processes are of the highest environmental, health and safety standards and in compliance with the evolving regulatory ecosystem. You will support our global teams in translating the product material compliance updates into R&D actions.

Your responsibilities

  • Strategically evaluate, and select materials and chemicals in our products and manufacturing processes that comply with relevant legislations, and industry standards as it pertains to the global transformers portfolio

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define material requirements and specifications for characterizing alternative materials and chemicals in our processes and products

  • Support the supply chain and quality department for supplier and internal audits as material and processing expert

  • Conduct technology scouting to understand industry and technology trends including the latest developments in materials science

  • Design and execute experiments to characterize and qualify new materials, ensuring they meet performance, durability, and safety requirements

  • Develop detailed reports containing the results of materials testing considering a variety of characterization methodologies (e.g. microscopy, mechanical testing, and thermal analysis, dielectric spectroscopy, oil analysis techniques…)

  • Able to transcend your chemical and materials knowledge across different classes of materials (e.g. oils, polymers, metals, ceramics, composites…)

  • Work closely with suppliers and vendors to source, evaluate, and qualify alternative materials and their processing protocols to assure increased sustainability impact of our products with enhanced EHS standards

  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on material selection, processing, and application to support product development and manufacturing processes

  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, technologies, and legislations in materials science and engineering, and evaluate their potential impact on our products and processes

  • Generate reports, documentation, and technical specifications related to material characterization, qualification, and compliance that highlights the potential of the alternative material to be transferred to our global product groups for further qualification

  • Proactively look for opportunities to gain IP and create commercial advantage through product innovation

  • Assist in root cause analysis and solutions as it pertains to material related topics

  • Collaborate with regulatory affairs teams to ensure materials compliance in R&D with evolving relevant regulatory requirements and certifications

  • Assist our corporate teams in updating the product material compliance checklist to assure optimal content leveraging within product development

  • Actively participate in transformers related external materials and sustainability standardization committees and industrial initiatives

Your background

  • Min. 5 years of experience in materials and chemicals characterization methodologies

  • Strong knowledge of global product material compliance regulations

  • University degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or related field

  • Strong general quantitative and qualitative analytical and problem-solving skills

  • Knowledge of global environmental regulations, including REACH, RoHS, TSCA and ability to translate the legislation into R&D actions

  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate complex information in clear, understandable ways to internal and external audiences

  • Ability to work closely with large and complex remote teams and in a multi-country & -cultural environment

  • Excellent project management skills with demonstrated capacity to take initiative, structure and prioritize own work, works effectively, independently and deliver on committed schedule

  • Strong written and oral communication skills, fluent in English, other European languages are a plus
