Electromechanical Technician for Superconducting Systems Development (TE-MSC-HSD-2024-79-LD)

Company Description

At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description

Introduction

Join a great team pushing the limits of high temperature superconducting accelerator systems, to shape the future of CERN largest accelerator. CERN, take part!

You will join the High Temperature Superconductors & Devices (HSD) Section, part of the Magnets, Superconductors and Cryostats (MSC) Group within the Technology (TE) Department. The Section has as main mandate the development, procurement and qualification of high temperature superconducting materials, wires, tapes and cables, and the development and fabrication of innovative high temperature superconducting devices and prototype coils for ongoing LHC upgrades and future accelerators. HSD is also responsible for maintenance of the high temperature superconducting and resistive current leads that are part of the Large Hadron Collider superconducting magnet circuits.

The section is presently focusing on development primarily relying on MgB2 and REBCO technology. The next few years will be crucial in the demonstration of the readiness of this technology for large scale accelerator application and in exploring its high field limits.

Functions

As Electromechanical Technician in the HSD Section, you will:

  • Play a key role in the development and qualification of high temperature superconductors and in the design and construction of high temperature superconducting devices and coils for the next generation of accelerators and for various diversification programs by:
    • Contributing to the design, assembly and qualification of resistive and high temperature superconducting current leads;
    • Contributing to technology development from the mock-up phase to the assembly of high temperature superconducting devices, e.g. electrical transfer lines, and high temperature superconducting coils via manufacturing follow-up, assembly activities, definition and integration of instrumentation;
    • Contributing to the quality control for different phases of the manufacturing activities;
    • Performing electrical measurements of superconductors and superconducting devices at cryogenic temperatures;
    • Be proactive in proposing design, manufacturing, assembly iterations whenever required;

Experience:

  • Proven experience in electromechanical complex equipment manufacturing and construction
  • Proven experience in the qualification of electromechanical equipment
  • Experience in electrical quality control, e.g. electrical insulation and instrumentation tests
  • Experience in instrumentation for electrical equipment
  • Experience in superconducting electromechanical devices construction and test would be an asset

Technical competencies:

  • Construction, test and installation of electromechanical equipment and systems
  • Knowledge and application of manufacturing methods and work preparation
  • Manufacturing of mechanical parts
  • Design, modelling and measurement of superconductors for magnets
