The University of Zurich invites applications for a professorship in theoretical philosophy with a focus on the philosophy of mind. The start date for the position is 1 February 2026.

Candidates must have a track record of excellent research with an international impact in the field of the philosophy of mind. They are expected to have relevant teaching experience and be able to cover the subject of theoretical philosophy broadly in their teaching, in particular the philosophy of language. In addition, it is desirable that they be able to offer courses in the history of philosophy. Conducting outstanding and original research in the field of philosophy, the future postholder will actively cooperate with other professors at the Department of Philosophy, at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, at other faculties of the University of Zurich, as well as with national and international institutions (in particular with the National Center of Competence in Research (NCCR) “Evolving Language”).

Candidates must hold a PhD in philosophy at the time of application and have an excellent record of academic publications in a field other than the one in their PhD thesis. Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, the professorship will be filled as a full or associate professorship. Non-German speaking candidates are expected to acquire a working knowledge of German and be able to teach in German within the first three years of their appointment.

The Department of Philosophy, the University of Zurich and Zurich as a university location offer a stimulating research and teaching environment with many opportunities for professional exchange and cooperation. The University of Zurich strives to increase diversity in research and teaching and therefore expressly invites applications from qualified women and individuals from other underrepresented groups.

Applications must be submitted online by 1 July 2024. Access and information on the online application can be found on the website of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
