Clinical Educator in Ruminant Surgery
(equivalent to Clinical Assistant Professor, with focus on teaching and clinical service)

The main tasks include teaching ruminant surgery to veterinary students and participation in clinical service of the Clinic for Ruminants of the Vetsuisse Faculty, University of Bern, as well as participation in the clinic's research projects. The Clinic for Ruminants at Bern University is a referral only clinic (open 24/7) receiving mostly patients from the Western part of Switzerland (the Eastern part being covered by the Clinic for Food Animals of the Vetsuisse Faculty in Zürich), with a yearly case load of approximately 900 patients. The patient population, consisting mostly of cattle (mainly dairy), as well as of small ruminants and South American Camelids, is received by a team of clinicians including Diplomates in all relevant disciplines of ruminant medicine (ECBHM, ACVIM, ECVS, ECAR) and residents (pursuing certification as ECBHM Diplomates and/or “Fachtierärztin/Fachtierarzt für Wiederkäuer”, the Swiss Board of practitioners in ruminant health). The Clinic for Ruminants consists of two units, the stationary clinic on campus with the ambulatory practice located in the surroundings of the City of Bern, and the ruminant health management section. The two entities collaborate closely to offer the best possible evidence- and research-based teaching to veterinary students and clinical service for animal owners, health services, consumers and the population at large. All veterinarians of the Clinic for Ruminants participate in clinical duty as well as in student and resident education. The stationary clinic is not subdivided into medicine, surgery or reproduction services, but works as one functional unit. The successful candidate will be responsible for the discipline of ruminant surgery in teaching and on clinics, but will participate in clinical service in all aspects of ruminant medicine in collaboration with the other specialists of the team.
Successful candidates are expected to contribute to the research output of the clinic and to supervise master and doctoral students (Dr. med. vet. and/or PhD). Research topics must be relevant to Ruminant Health and Welfare in the perspective of modern agriculture in Switzerland.

Mandatory requirements are: (I) veterinary diploma, (II) Board Certification (or eligibility) by the European/American College of Veterinary Surgery (Large Animal), (III) doctoral title (PhD, MSc and/or Dr. med. vet., or equivalent academic qualification), and (IV) research publications in the field of Ruminant Health and Welfare. The successful candidate has at least basic knowledge of the German and/or French language/s and is willing to improve these language skills to efficiently teach students and communicate with patient owners in both languages.
