Bioinformatics Database Developer Position at 75-100%

Contract length : This contrat is for minimum 1 year


Activity rate : 75%-100%

Your responsibilities

The Laboratory of Professor van de Waal, at the Department of Ecology and Evolution, UNIL, is seeking for a highly motivated bioinformatician, with background in database programming and data curation, and with interest to work developing a database for a long-term behavioural project on a wild population of vervet monkeys (7 groups, over 250 individuals, followed since 14 years). The successful candidate will closely work with data & scientific managers of the field site, PhD students and postdoctoral fellows on developing the database for the INKAWU Vervet Project (IVP).
 
This position will require a dedicated person, able to work autonomously to carry on day-to-day tasks to participate in the achievement of the goals, and motivated to work in collaboration with a large group of international researchers to understand the dataset and the need for this database.
 
The job description is as follow:
70% Development of IVP database
20% Data Curation prior entry in IVP database
10% Support in data acquisition and usage of the database for team members


Your qualifications


  • Master in bioinformatics, applied computer science or relevant field

  • Good knowledge of English (able to work in English, written and spoken)

  • Two year of experience in development of database and data curation; an eventual PhD will be counted as work experience

  • Good knowledge of SQL programming

  • Interest to understand biological datasets and research questions related to animal behaviour

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills to work in an intercultural team


 


Profile



  • Strong motivation, proactivity, willingness to collaborate with researchers from various cultural backgrounds in a team spirit attitude to develop the IVP database as well as an interest to understand the behavioural datasets involved

  • Ability to evaluate on their own the quality of the work done, as well as to record and communicate results with clarity and completeness

  • Very good personal organization and time management skills

  • Ability to take initiatives in the development of the IVP database, and to discuss with team members about options

  • Persistence, patience and precision in repetitive tasks such as data cleaning
