R&D Engineer (Geneva - Switzerland)
Join the FIA and lead the technological evolution at the intersection of motorsport innovation, sustainability, and regulation.
This is a newly created role within a young and growing team dedicated to future technology. As R&D Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of electrified propulsion technologies and sustainable energy within the FIA’s competitions. You will be the technical architect behind the regulations and roadmaps that position the FIA at the forefront of innovation in motorsport.
In this role, you will lead FIA activities in electric powertrains, batteries, and charging infrastructure while ensuring alignment with future regulations and strategic environmental goals. You will report directly to the Head of R&D.
MISSIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
REGULATION & STRATEGY
- Lead the development, update, and enforcement of FIA technical regulations related to electric powertrains for current and future competitions.
- Define and manage sustainability-related technical requirements, establishing criteria for low-carbon materials, recyclability, and environmental performance.
- Contribute to the definition and update of FIA technical roadmaps for electrified and sustainable propulsion systems, ensuring alignment with the FIA’s long-term vision for innovation.
R&D & TECHNOLOGY MONITORING
- Evaluate emerging technologies in electric powertrains, including advanced batteries (solid-state, high-energy density), charging infrastructure, and electric drive units.
- Monitor, assess, and support the implementation of hydrogen propulsion systems (hydrogen ICEs, fuel cells, cryogenic storage) in motorsport applications.
- Track technological trends in batteries, hydrogen, sustainable materials, and energy systems, translating these technical insights into actionable regulatory proposals and strategic recommendations.
TECHNICAL LIAISON & GOVERNANCE
- Collaborate closely with OEMs, teams, and technical suppliers to ensure proper alignment between new propulsion and energy technologies and FIA competition frameworks.
- Represent the FIA in technical meetings, expert panels, and working groups with external stakeholders, ensuring clarity, consistency, and technical robustness in FIA regulations, guidelines, and bulletins.
- Provide technical expertise and support electrified propulsion projects, ensuring successful execution from concept to implementation.
PROFILE:
- Master’s or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Energy Systems, or a related field.
- Minimum of 10 years’ experience in research and development, preferably within the motorsport sector.
- Proven expertise in batteries and electrification is essential.
- Strong understanding of chassis design, powertrain integration, and hydrogen propulsion systems.
- Knowledge of motorsport regulations and technical frameworks is a significant asset.
- Experience in materials science, structural analysis, and performance simulation is beneficial.
- Proven ability to lead and follow projects, ensuring successful execution from concept to implementation.
- Languages: Fluent English (written and spoken) is required.
This position is based at the FIA offices in Geneva.
