About the job
The Small Animal University Hospital of the Vetsuisse Faculty in Bern is a busy, multi-disciplinary, referral hospital in Switzerland. We are committed to providing high standards of patient care as well as postgraduate training (internships and residencies). Our hospital handles a diverse and interesting caseload, making it an excellent environment for both learning and teaching. A strong sense of teamwork adds a positive dynamic to daily clinical work. The position is to be filled for a fixed term of 3.5 years, starting on 1 April 2026 (or by mutual agreement).
The Residency Position
You will be supervised and work daily with two neurologists supported by European and American specialist clinicians in a wide range of disciplines, including anesthesia, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine (general and nephrology), emergency and critical care, orthopedics, soft tissue surgery, and ophthalmology.
Our hospital has excellent facilities of an advanced referral hospital, including 3-Tesla MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, and electrophysiology, plus advanced neurosurgery equipment for computer-assisted brain and spine surgery, video-endoscopy, microsurgery, and minimally invasive surgery. On-site physiotherapy is also provided to our patients.
Tasks
Clinical Time
You will work under supervision with daily patient care, consultations, diagnostic procedures, and neurosurgeries. You will join weekly neurology journal clubs, book clubs, radiology, and neuropathology rounds. Clinical teaching of students and interns is expected, as is participation in emergency “out of hours” duty.
Off-Clinic Time
You will have 4-5 months to complete the required ECVN credentials, including clinical rotations in related specialties, and your own residency research project. Participation in international congresses is also encouraged. You will also receive 5 weeks of holidays – ideal time to enjoy beautiful Switzerland with breathtaking landscapes and multiple possibilities for sports and other recreational activities.
We seek a motivated veterinarian who
• Holds a veterinary degree
• Has at least two years of general practice experience and/or has completed a rotating or specialty internship
• Is proficient in English and in German and/or French (basic knowledge of the third language is required, along with a willingness to improve)
• Ideally, has had some exposure to neurology,
• Is ready to join emergency duty coverage, teaching, and academic activities
