Survey Technician (BE-GM-ESA-2025-101-LD)
Publication date:
14 May 2025- Place of work:Geneva
Company Description
At CERN , the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction
Join the Geodetic Metrology group at CERN, where you will take part in the metrology and alignment of a wide variety of components that are used in particle physics experiments. You will use state-of-the art surveying tools and software to achieve the sub-millimetre accuracy necessary to meet our goals. You will apply the alignment solutions for the upgrade of the CERN experiments, including the detectors of the CERN’s flagship accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Take part!
Functions
As a Survey Technician integrated in the ESA (Experiment Surveying and Alignment) section in charge of the geodetic metrology and alignment of physics experiments, you will:
- Realize measurements at all stages of the production of the detector components from prototypes to installation in situ.
- Realize the measurements related to the adjustment, alignment and positioning of various components and detectors of the experiments according to the needs of the responsible persons.
- Perform measurements using standard geodetic 3D techniques, 3D laser scanning and laser tracking, including the in-field data acquisition and the data treatment survey software.
- Write reports, relevant documentation and present the results to your colleagues.
- Give feedback to improve the survey field procedures, methods and software.

Technical certificate or general secondary education or equivalent relevant experience in the field of Surveying or geomatics or a related field.
Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in the domain of surveying or industrial metrology including the knowledge of instruments and the methods used in this field.
- Demonstrated experience in the organisation and preparation of in-field work.
- An experience in the domain of 3D scanning would be an asset.
Training in CERN specific instrumentation and methods will be provided.
Technical competencies:
- Knowledge and application of high-precision survey methods and tools.
- Use of survey instruments: (theodolites, total stations, levels).
- Use of laser scanning and laser trackers.
- Knowledge and application of survey data acquisition and treatment software.
