About the job
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. We perform cutting-edge research in the fields of future technologies, energy and climate, health innovation and fundamentals of nature. By performing fundamental and applied research, we work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore, about one quarter of our staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices. Altogether, PSI employs 2300 people.

Your tasks
The position focuses on uncovering catalytic reaction mechanisms using advanced PEPICO spectroscopy at the Swiss Light Source in collaboration with partners across NCCR Catalysis.
- You develop catalytic reactors and sources for integration with the CRF-PEPICO endstation at the VUV beamline, enabling mechanistic studies in catalysis
- You work within NCCR Catalysis, a Swiss research community advancing catalysis for a sustainable future and develop collaborative research projects with partners across Switzerland
- You devise and submit beamtime proposals, lead measurement campaigns, and analyze data in catalytic reaction mechanism studies on topics including C–C coupling, Fischer–Tropsch synthesis of higher alcohols, plasma-assisted catalysis, and the valorization of plastic waste and lignocellulosic feedstocks
- You present your results at conferences and publish them in peer-reviewed journals
Your profile
- PhD degree in chemistry, chemical engineering, physics, or related discipline, with a strong background in catalysis
- Experience in the design and construction of high-vacuum and/or catalytic reactor experiments
- Expertise in several of the following: chemical analysis; spectroscopic methods such as mass spectrometry, IR, UV/vis, valence photoelectron or X-ray spectroscopy; and work at large-scale facilities
- Good command of English
We offer
Through NCCR Catalysis, you will join a broad network of researchers across Switzerland, gaining new perspectives, visibility, and connections that support your scientific and professional development. Our institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a motivating work environment, in addition to personal development possibilities. We will support you with modern employment conditions and on-site infrastructure to combine work and family life or other personal interests.
Your employment contract is limited to 2 years.
