The Archaeology and Ancient Sciences Section of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Lausanne is advertising a position for a first assistant in Roman provincial archaeology
Job-related information
Start date: August 1, 2026
Contract duration: 1 year, renewable 2 x 2 years, maximum 5 years
Work rate: 80%
Workplace: Lausanne-Dorigny
Your activities
At least 50% of the work rate will be dedicated to:
- Personal or collective research to be presented in the form of a research project of maximum 3 pages
Up to 50% of the work rate will be devoted to:
- Participation and organization of field missions with the ASA team and writing reports related to them
- Participation in teaching up to a maximum of 2 hours per week (practical courses at BA or MA level), under the responsibility of a professor
- Supervision of students and handling of exams
- Participation in research activities and administration of the Section
Your profile
PhD in archaeology or equivalent degree (thesis submitted at the time of starting).
Specialization in Iron Age and/or Roman period archaeology
Strong interest in developing digital methodological tools (statistical analyses, use of AI, 3D modeling) related to artifact studies and/or field operations, from prospection to report writing
Willingness to develop a personal research project in these areas
Experience in excavations with operational responsibility and report writing
Experience in practical and theoretical teaching
Other specializations related to the institute's research fields are welcome
Ability to take initiative and work independently and in a team
Good command of French
The first assistant mandate cannot be performed as a continuation of a diploma assistant mandate at UNIL; the candidate must have at least twelve months of professional and/or research experience after the end of their assistant contract.
If a person successively holds, with or without interruption, a senior SNSF researcher position and then a first assistant position, or vice versa, a first assistant position and then a senior SNSF researcher position, the total duration of contracts related to these two types of positions cannot exceed five years, except in cases of force majeure.
