- Place of work:Geneva
Company Description
At CERN , the European Organisation for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature.
Job Description
Introduction
Join a multidisciplinary project team designing, fabricating and testing a new generation of components for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC).
Be in charge of engineering studies and design of the new HL-LHC cryogenic distribution lines (QXL).
Structural static and buckling computations, thermo-mechanical studies, design of pressure equipment, advanced materials and material modelling, cryogenics, ultra-high vacuum technology, sustainable design and manufacturing, safety, reliability, product lifecycle management are just a few of the keywords related to this position.

Functions
- Be in charge of the mechanical engineering and design of components and equipment for accelerators, including technical drawings, for the Cryogenic Distribution Lines for the HL-LHC project.
- Perform state-of-the-art computations and simulations to dimension, analyse and optimise mechanical systems, components and their fabrication techniques, also reducing environmental impact and cost.
- Participate in a multi-technology project, in close interaction with other engineering teams and services, in particular CERN workshops, and taking part to product prototyping, tests, and diagnostics.
- Prepare and manage documentation such as presentations, technical reports, engineering specifications and calculation notes.
- Report on project activities advancement.

Experience:
- Demonstrated experience in mechanical engineering and design according to industrial standards, manufacturing methods and assembly techniques within a design office in industry or research centres.
- Demonstrated experience with finite element computations and computer-aided design, including thermo-mechanical analyses. Experience with ANSYS finite element software package and CATIA CAD tool would be an asset.
- Initial experience in managing mechanical projects from conceptual design to testing, prototyping and manufacturing phases.
- Knowledge of mechanical engineering and design of pressure lines and vessels, as well as the related European directives and standards (e.g. PED 2014/68/EU, EN 13480, EN 13445) would be an asset.
- Experience in preparing technical reports and engineering specifications.
- Some experience with mechanical designing of cryogenic equipment would be an advantage.
Technical competencies:
- Design and analysis of mechanical structures: by finite-element and analytical methods.
- Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics: including thermo-mechanical simulations, and advanced material modelling.
- Knowledge and application of cryogenic heat transfer and insulation techniques: especially low-temperature material behaviour and related fabrication techniques.
- Knowledge of design codes and compliance verification of mechanical equipment: including pressure vessels and piping systems.
- Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: in compliance with relevant standards for dimensioning and tolerancing.
Behavioural competencies:
- Achieving Results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
- Demonstrating Flexibility: adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements.
- Managing Self: working well autonomously; taking on activities and tasks without prompting.
- Solving Problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them.
