Neuenegg, November 5, 2019 - The Swiss food producer Wander aims to manufacture its products completely without palm oil by 2021. The company is now taking the first and biggest step towards palm oil-free production. Wander replaces the palm oil in the Ovomaltine Crunchy Cream spread with Swiss rapeseed oil. This allows it to reduce its total palm oil consumption by 80 percent. After more than two years of development, the project managers in Neuenegg, at the headquarters of Wander AG, are proud to take a new and innovative path to produce the spread without palm oil while maintaining the same quality.
Swiss Rapeseed Oil as a Substitute
The Ovomaltine spread previously contained a mixture of rapeseed and palm oil. Now the manufacturer Wander replaces the palm oil entirely with Swiss rapeseed oil. "The renunciation of an ecologically questionable raw material corresponds to our basic attitude," emphasizes CEO Arnold Furtwaengler. "We want to offer consumers as sustainable products as possible. Whenever possible, we source raw materials locally. We are pleased that we can now use Swiss rapeseed oil for our spread," Furtwaengler continues. Over the next two years, palm oil is also to disappear from the remaining Wander products. CEO Furtwaengler even wants to go one step further if possible: "Our goal is to generally eliminate fats originating from tropical rainforests as much as possible – and replace them with sustainable, local raw materials."
From Now On, Palm Oil-Free Jars Roll Off the Line
In the future, only jars of Ovomaltine Crunchy Cream without palm oil will be on the shelves. The conversion was a major challenge for the company's development department, as it was long considered almost impossible to produce a palm oil-free spread without accompanying qualitative changes. Thanks to the combination of new raw materials and a special production process, Wander can achieve the same spreadability as before without palm oil. "And this without any change in the product's taste," explains Wander food engineer Andrea Geiselmann with pride. "Not even our own employees recognize the difference."
