Job description
The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva benefits from an enriching multicultural dynamic, to which it contributes through its influence within the mandates entrusted to it: teaching, research, and partnership with the Geneva University Hospitals (HUG).To strengthen its dynamic team, the Department of Microbiology and Molecular Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva is looking for a:
Assistant Professor in Molecular Virology (100%)
The virology laboratory led by Professor Caroline Tapparel Vu studies the biology of human enteroviruses, particularly emerging and/or neurotropic strains, relying on reverse genetics, cellular and tissue models, as well as advanced approaches to analyze the viral cycle - from cell entry to intercellular spread -, recombination, and susceptibility to neutralizing antibodies. The holder will ensure the scientific and technical continuity of ongoing projects, experimental coordination, and supervision of young researchers.
- Design, plan, and conduct experimental programs on enteroviruses: reverse genetics, creation and validation of mutants, study of inter-strain recombination, determinants of tropism and neurovirulence, identification of host factors influencing replication (CRISPR/Cas screenings).
- Implement and optimize infections on tissue models: maintenance, differentiation, infections, sampling (apical/basolateral), molecular and functional analyses.
- Develop and standardize virological tests (infectivity, neutralization, entry/disassembly) and analysis pipelines (qRT-PCR, imaging, NGS).
- Provide scientific supervision of young researchers (training in methods, best practices, EHS/BSL-2) and coordinate internal and external collaborations.
- Document experiments rigorously, analyze and interpret data, write publications and funding applications.
- Participate in laboratory life: team meetings, equipment management, quality procedures, continuous protocol improvement.
Required title and skills
- PhD in life sciences (molecular virology) or equivalent degree.
- Minimum 5 years documented experience in molecular virology, evidenced by peer-reviewed publications as first and/or corresponding author.
- Proven mastery of reverse genetics and analysis of viral tropism and spread on cell or tissue cultures.
- Familiarity with cell culture under BSL-2 conditions, classical virology methods (titration by TCID50, FFA or plaque assay, confocal imaging, neutralization tests, and phenotypic characterization of variants).
- Proficiency in office software.
- Availability at 100% and compliance with regulatory requirements (EHS/BSL-2, internal training).
Additional assets:
- Experience in animal experimentation (murine models).
- Skills in omics analyses and/or bioinformatics applied to virology (e.g., targeted NGS, quasispecies analysis, CRISPR/Cas screening).
- Experience in supervision (PhD students, master’s students) and coordination of multi-partner projects.
- Ability to write manuscripts.
- Excellent command of scientific English; basic knowledge of French desired.
- Proven ability to obtain research funding.
- Mobility.
