Head of Coordination External Relations 100%The State Chancellery advises and supports the Government Council and the Government Presidency in the performance of government tasks. It acts as an interface between the directorates and provides services as a staff unit that ensure the smooth functioning of the Government Council as a collegial authority.
The Coordination External Relations division in the State Chancellery manages the cross-directorate external relations affairs of the Canton of Zurich, especially in the inter-cantonal, cross-border, international, and European areas as well as vis-à-vis the federal government. It supports the members of the Government Council in fulfilling their duties in inter-cantonal and international bodies and in receiving foreign delegations. The division is also responsible for cantonal voting planning and acts as a liaison to the Cantonal Council.
As Head of Coordination External Relations, you lead a dynamic team of three people. You have a close connection to the Canton of Zurich and are familiar with its conditions. With motivation and responsibility, you represent the interests of the Canton of Zurich. Starting June 1, 2026, or by agreement, we are looking for a qualified individual who enjoys taking responsibility, is future-oriented, and eager to shape the future.
Your new challenge
- Advising and supporting the Government Council on inter-cantonal, international, and European political issues as well as in fulfilling its representative duties in conferences and committees
- Preparation of federal policy, advocacy
- Representation of the Canton of Zurich in various institutions and committees
- Professional support of the Government Council in international representation tasks, reception of delegations
- Coordination of the external relations of the directorates and the State Chancellery as well as information exchange
- Network building and maintenance, forward-looking environmental controlling
- Member of the steering committee (management) of the State Chancellery
You bring
- University degree in political science, law, or international relations
- Profound knowledge of political institutions (canton, inter-cantonal, federal, EU)
- Relevant professional experience in a strategic, political, or diplomatic role, with experience in the public sector
- Strong communication skills and fluency in oral and written expression in German, English, and French
- Confident and engaging demeanor, even in sensitive situations, political judgment, and political sensitivity
- Strong identification with the Canton of Zurich to advocate for its goals and interests
- Several years of experience in implementing modern leadership approaches
