Senior EHS Expert (f/m/d)

As a Senior EHS Expert (f/m/d), you will support the entire Bern site in all central EHS topics, including occupational safety, health protection, and environmental management.
The role combines broad EHS expertise, systemic thinking, and strong leadership/communication skills to identify risks early, ensure compliance, and drive site-wide improvements.

The position is aimed at senior professionals with at least 7+ years of EHS experience and a higher educational qualification.

Main tasks and responsibilities

Holistic shopfloor presence & coaching

• Regular presence in production, engineering, laboratories, logistics, and support areas
• Coaching teams and leaders in safe and healthy working
• Promoting a proactive health, safety, and environmental culture
• Conducting observations, safety & health walks, environmental checks, and follow-ups
• Supporting the tier meeting structure (Tier 1–3)

Health protection & occupational health

• Identification and assessment of health-relevant risks (e.g., ergonomics, exposure risks, noise, climate, chemical impacts)
• Collaboration with medical services and external specialists
• Support of investigations and health monitoring programs
• Development of prevention measures for physical and mental health
• Promotion of wellbeing approaches and health-promoting workplace design

Environmental management (Environment)

• Support and further development of all environmental management processes:
  • waste management
  • emissions
  • energy efficiency
  • wastewater
  • hazardous substance/chemical storage
  • resource management
  • sustainability initiatives
• Participation in ISO-14001 compliance and environmental compliance
• Conducting environmental walks and environmental hazard analyses
• Support during audits and regulatory contacts

Risk analyses & hazard assessments

• Moderation and execution of risk analyses according to ISO 45001 and ISO 14001:
  • hazard assessments
  • HAZOP
  • FMEA
  • Bow-Tie
  • Task risk assessments
• Building and maintaining the site-wide risk register
• Identification of systemic weaknesses and derivation of sustainable improvements

Incident investigation & continuous improvement

• Leading pSIF, EHS incidents, and environmental events
• Applying methods such as ICAM, RCA, or TapRoot
• Integrating lessons learned into standards, processes, and training
• Promoting an open, learning-oriented culture

Systems thinking & EHS governance

• Assessing interrelations between technology, organization, people, and environment
• Contributing to the EHS operating model, standards, roles, and processes
• Developing site-wide EHS solutions that address causes rather than symptoms
• Participating in strategic initiatives and EHS programs (e.g., risk, culture, leadership)

Requirements & qualifications

Professional experience

• At least 7+ years of experience in the EHS field (health, safety & environment)
• Experience in regulated industries (pharma, biotech, chemical) is an advantage
• Solid practice in health risk management, environmental compliance & technical safety assessments

Education

• Higher educational qualification, e.g.:
  • MSc / MAS Safety Engineering
  • MSc Environmental or Process Engineering
  • MSc Life Sciences / Natural Sciences
  • Equivalent field
• Further training in environmental management or occupational health is an advantage

Professional skills

• Very good knowledge of ISO 45001 (safety & health) and ISO 14001 (environmental management)
• Ability to recognize interrelations between health, environment, technology, and processes
• Experience with waste, emissions, and resource topics
• Familiarity with EHS systems, reporting, and risk management tools

Soft skills & leadership

• Strong communication and moderation skills
• Ability to lead and convince stakeholders at all levels
• Team-oriented, networked, solution-focused
• High independence, ownership, and decisiveness

Languages

• German: business fluent
• English: very good
