Introduction
UNIL is a leading international teaching and research institution, with over 5,000 employees and 17,000 students split between its Dorigny campus, CHUV and Epalinges. As an employer, UNIL encourages excellence, individual recognition and responsibility.
Presentation
An SNSF-funded post-doctoral position in the development of luminescence-based stress gauging is available in the Institute of Earth Surface Dynamics (IDyST) at the University of Lausanne, focussing on exploring the potential of luminescence in natural minerals to record and quantify rock stress. The proof-of-concept project will involve conducting controlled laboratory experiments that apply compressional and shear stress under varying temperature conditions to intact rock samples, followed by detailed analysis of thermoluminescence and optically stimulated luminescence responses. The postdoc will coordinate and execute the experimental programme, including sample preparation, stress testing using triaxial presses, luminescence measurements, and data evaluation. Integration across the project will require close collaboration with specialists in rock mechanics, luminescence physics, and data. The position offers a central role in testing and developing a novel method that may have far-reaching implications for geochronology, petrology, geomorphology, and hazard assessment.
