The Institute of Information Systems and Digital Business (IWI-HSG) has been conducting application- and design-oriented research at the interface between business and IT for more than 30 years. Within the institute, the team of Prof. Dr. Ivo Blohm investigates how companies can use data from digital platforms to
improve their decision-making, innovation and work processes and develop innovative business solutions.
Your tasks
Are you looking for an exciting PhD opportunity at the intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Information Systems? Do you wonder how the strengths of (Generative) Artificial Intelligence and humans can be combined to improve creativity, productivity, or well-being? Are you interested in the design of Agentic AI systems and how humans can collaborate with them? If yes, then you would be a perfect fit for our team. In our research projects, we focus on developing and evaluating theories, methods, and solutions for effectively designing integrating (Generative) Artificial Intelligence in organizations.
- Systematic development of method and solutions to support human work processes using Machine Learning and (Generative) Artificial Intelligence (e.g., in the context of agentic AI, chat and voice bots, or text generation).
- Developing and (experimental) evaluation of prototypes.
- Publishing papers at leading international conferences and journals.
- Different avenues for developing your PhD thesis given your skills and interests.
- Independent project work in a research area of high theoretical and practical relevance.
- A high degree of freedom and intensive collaboration in the development of your research topic.
- Integration into a young, dynamic, and interdisciplinary research group.
- Collaboration with renowned research institutions, startups, and corporations.
- Supporting innovative teaching formats in the context of Business Analytics and Data Science.

Your profile
- Master's degree with a grade point average of at least 5.0 in (Business), Informatics, (Business) Engineering, Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Administration, or a similar field (equivalent to 2.0 in Germany and Austria).
- Strong knowledge in the fields of Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Natural Language Processing, and Generative AI.
- Good programming skills in Python and experience with popular frameworks for Machine Learning (e.g., scikit-learn, xgb), Deep Learning (e.g., PyTorch), Generative AI (e.g., Lang-/GraphChain, OpenAI Responses API); Knowledge of web services (e.g., FastAPI) and containerization is a plus.
- A motivated and responsible personality with dedication, integrity, and intellectual curiosity.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both German and English.
- Initial practical professional experiences.
