The Program of Social Anthropology at the University of Basel, Switzerland, is searching for a doctoral fellow with a strong training in - and innovative ideas for - the theory and methods of socio-cultural anthropology. Candidates' research and teaching must focus on sexuality, gender, and religion in their relationship to either (i) populism, fundamentalism, and/or the security state; (ii) new religious movements; or (iii) multimodal ethnographic methods (e.g., visual, sonic, and other methods). The area of specialization is open but special preference will be given to research projects that expand the existing regional foci of the program.
 
The successful candidate's appointment should begin on August 1, 2024 (with teaching duties starting on September 16, 2024).
The position is limited to 1 year with the option of a 3-year extension after a successful evaluation.

Your position

  • Collaborate on research projects, and contribute to publications
  • Actively participate in the scholarly community of the Institute Social Anthropology, including the weekly colloquium and other events
  • At different times, you will help advance the Institute's public engagement initiative, by assisting in the production of either our podcast, periodical, or field school
  • Teach two hours per week during the semester at the BA level
  • Be able to teach "Anthropology of Religion"; "Methods," and other courses related to ritual, religion, and sexuality
  • Mentor BA students with their proseminar papers
  • Help with a limited number of administrative tasks, as needed

Your profile

  •  At least one previous degree must be in socio-cultural anthropology
  •  Fluency in spoken and written English
  •  Ability to teach in German strongly preferred
