Role
This vacancy arises as a result of the growth of the School and the need for us to recruit an enthusiastic and well-qualified teacher to work in the Primary alongside our Head of Drama. This is a part-time position (initially 30%) that is expected to grow as further year groups are added to the Secondary and as drama and performing arts continue to develop at GES. In the first year the teaching will be in Years 1 to 4. The post-holder will direct shows and performances in the Lower School (Nursery to Year 2) and in Years 3 & 4. S/he will also provide advice and direction for the provision of drama and expressive movement in the Early Years. This is an exciting time to join GES and to help to shape the drama department.
Drama at GES
At GES we appreciate and understand the importance of performing arts in the curriculum and our aim is to provide children with a platform from which they can develop the essential skills of speaking and listening, self-confidence, co-operation and community.
Drama and dance are taught on a weekly basis across the School from Nursery to Year 9. We provide a safe and supportive environment in which the children can gain confidence and learn to express themselves through a variety of performing arts. The progressive curriculum is designed to encourage children’s creativity, natural curiosity and imagination. As well as developing expressive and technical skills, lessons support various classroom-based topics throughout the year, with the aim of deepening the understanding of a particular text or subject.
There are various performance opportunities for all year groups including performance assemblies, visiting workshops, theme days, puppet shows, French drama and the annual year group productions. Our extra-curricular performing arts and drama clubs also play a large role in preparing for our productions. Children are encouraged to reflect on their own and others’ performance through theatre visits and in-school performance opportunities and gradually learn to express their response to performance by developing their skills of appreciation.
At GCSE, we offer Drama (AQA specification) as an optional subject. We will also offer A-Level Drama.
