Most depictions of Saint Apollonia in Switzerland date from the late Middle Ages and the 18th century, representing the heyday of her veneration. She first reached a peak with the development of special patronages in the late Middle Ages, which, however, quickly came to an end due to the Reformation.
Under the influence of the Counter-Reformation, the Catholic Church helped the Apollonia cult to flourish again in the Baroque era. After this period, there was a significant decline. With the advancing development of dentistry and the establishment of a new professional role, that of the dentist, her patronage gradually lost importance until it finally played a role only in rural areas in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Today, Saint Apollonia is regarded as the patron saint of dentists and all professions that have developed in and around the dental field. And in the meeting room of the University Dental Clinics in Basel, she watches over all decisions for the benefit of our patients, just as she does with us in the practice at Hirschistrasse 7 in Schwyz.
