As of 01.08.2026 or by arrangement, a lectureship (70%) in Slavic Linguistics is to be filled at the Institute for Slavic Languages and Literatures (ISSL) of the University of Bern.
The future holder of the lectureship is expected to deliver innovative research achievements in Slavic linguistics as well as committed teaching, especially in the instruction of Ukrainian. The position holder contributes to teaching in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in Slavic Studies as well as in the interdisciplinary Eastern European Studies program with a workload of 10 (lectureship) or 6 (assistant lectureship) semester hours per week. In particular, they take on language courses in Ukrainian. In addition, the position holder is responsible for coordinating the joint degree programs in Slavic Studies and Eastern European Studies (both programs are offered in cooperation between Bern and Fribourg) and participates in the collaboration of the ISSL with related disciplines and the Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS).
The position holder brings experience in academic self-administration.
Depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate, the position will be filled at the level of assistant lectureship with tenure track or lectureship. A completed doctorate in Slavic linguistics and native knowledge of Ukrainian are prerequisites for employment in any case. For an assistant lectureship, teaching experience and a postdoctoral project must also be demonstrated. Upon successful evaluation, there is the prospect of permanent employment and conversion of the position into a permanent lectureship. Employment requirements for a lectureship include publications in a second research field besides the dissertation topic, several years of teaching and research experience, and experience in acquiring third-party funding. Solid knowledge of the primary teaching and administrative language German is expected or must be demonstrated no later than two years after starting the position; good knowledge of French and English is desired.
Salary is paid according to the personnel regulations of the Canton of Bern.
