ETH Zurich offers, in addition to teaching and research as another important pillar, a professional vocational education for 200 apprentices in 15 different professions. In the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences at ETH Zurich, the basic training for apprentices as laboratory technicians specializing in chemistry EFZ is carried out in a modern equipped teaching laboratory. We are looking for a Head of the Chemistry Teaching Laboratory starting January 1, 2026, or by arrangement.

Job description
In this role, you are responsible for the organization, operation, and further development of the Chemistry teaching laboratory and the apprenticeship profession at ETH. You conduct basic training in the form of inter-company and internal courses and develop new training modules. At the same time, you accompany the apprentices during their basic training, promoting their technical and methodological skills on the one hand and their social and personal skills on the other. In addition, you are the personnel leader of the second trainer of the teaching laboratory.
Another focus of your work is conducting trial apprenticeships and recruiting future apprentices. Besides activities related to the teaching laboratory, you plan rotations to the line positions and ensure a smooth transition as well as successful on-the-job training.
You are also the contact person for the trainers at the rotation positions, supporting and enabling them in supervising the apprentices and in conducting the practical final apprenticeship examinations. You take an active role in projects to further develop and implement modern vocational training.
You work closely with the vocational training team and other professional fields, as well as with the Department of Chemistry and Applied Biosciences (D-CHAB), where the teaching laboratory is located. Participation in interdisciplinary, cross-professional projects within the ETH Zurich training company network ideally complements your area of activity.
Profile
- EFZ as a laboratory technician specializing in chemistry, preferably with an analytical focus
- Tertiary degree in the field of Life Sciences is not mandatory but can be an advantage
- Several years of professional experience in an industrial or academic environment
- Willingness to take responsibility and work independently
- Ideally experience and/or qualification in the pedagogical/andragogical field (SVEB 1, Federal Diploma Trainer) or willingness for corresponding training or further education
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Authentic and constructive demeanor
- Affinity for digital processes and good German and English skills, both spoken and written
