About the job
Technical Employee Organic Chemistry (60%, 18 months)
Laboratory Organic Analytics and References | Starting date May 1, 2026 or by arrangement
The Swiss Federal Institute of Metrology METAS is the reference institute for measurements and measuring instruments in Switzerland. To ensure that a liter is always a liter (e.g., when refueling), METAS performs calibrations, conformity assessments, and consultations for business, research, and administration. Measurement accuracy creates trust, especially at the societal and political level, and is indispensable in many areas: road traffic, electricity billing, time transmission, measurements in environmental and health sectors, etc. At METAS, various disciplines come together and complement each other – and this has been the case since 1862.
Our Laboratory for Organic Analytics and References provides reliable, accurate, and traceable measurements for administration, industry, and research. We analyze organic contaminants in food, in materials that come into contact with food, and in biological samples using various chromatography techniques coupled with mass spectrometry. We continuously develop and improve our analytical methods to ensure innovative and high-quality services. Furthermore, we ensure traceability to internationally coordinated reference masses to enable worldwide comparability of results.

Your new challenge
- Sample preparation and treatment (homogenization, extraction, purification) for the analysis of organic contaminants in food, in materials that come into contact with food, and/or in biological samples.
- Support in chemical analyses using GC-MS/MS and LC-MS/MS, including preparation of solutions and standards as well as initiation of analysis sequences.
- Management of material inventory, general laboratory maintenance, first-level maintenance of equipment, and participation in related documentation.
- Careful documentation of experimental activities and results in compliance with internal procedures and quality requirements (LIMS, laboratory notebooks, traceability).
- Possible involvement in the development of new analytical methods.
Your profile
- For beginners with a completed apprenticeship as a laboratory technician EFZ specializing in chemistry.
- Laboratory experience in sample preparation and instrumental analysis, ideally for the analysis of organic contaminants and food samples (homogenization, extraction with organic solvents, SPE).
- Basic knowledge and/or interest in acquiring skills in chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS, LC-MS/MS).
- Carefulness, attention to detail, structured working style, strict adherence to quality procedures, as well as independence, team spirit, and the ability to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic environment simultaneously.
- Good communication skills in spoken and written form, ideally in two official languages as well as in English.
We offer a varied and challenging activity at the interface of industry and research. Become part of our team and contribute to important projects on organic contaminants that support public health, environmental protection, and sustainability. In addition, you will contribute to maintaining a laboratory infrastructure that meets international quality standards. We offer attractive working conditions, a well-coordinated team, a strong professional network, as well as training and development opportunities.
