Revelation of an Unprecedented World
The cabinet exhibition at the Goetheanum presents around 20 paintings by Margarita Woloschina (1882–1973). The works from her second half of life come from the collection at the Goetheanum, the Rudolf Steiner Archive, and two private collections. Also on display are paintings by her husband Maximilian Woloschin.
The painter and writer Margarita Woloschina, born in 1882 in Moscow, Russia, gained public recognition at a young age as a portrait painter of Russian celebrities. However, she soon questioned the naturalistic painting style of her teacher Ilja Repin and wrote in her diary: "Does it make sense to repeat what already exists? A completely different art must arise that reveals a world never seen before."
Her questions and inner search led to an encounter with Rudolf Steiner, through which the artist repeatedly spent extended periods at the Goetheanum in Dornach, Switzerland. There she contributed to the construction of the First Goetheanum, both in carving the capitals and in painting the ceiling of the small dome.
Through her engagement with anthroposophy, Margarita Woloschina dealt with the essence of colour. In her autobiography The Green Snake she formulated her perceptions: "To transform the experience of feeling into colour, into the movement of colour, which becomes rhythm and finally form." The idea, she noted, must "always be intuited as a being, a whole." And she added: "The composition should not be fixed like with the old masters, but arise."
From this engagement, Margarita Woloschina developed a new painting style primarily for spiritual-religious motifs. In the art gallery at the Goetheanum, around 20 of her watercolours on the life of Christ are on display until 24 April 2022. The exhibition is complemented by landscape moods by her husband Maximilian Woloschin.
