The opportunity
Hitachi Energy Research, in close collaboration with all business areas, is developing foundations for the next generation of Power Grids products and services. Located in the proximity of Zurich, the research center employs approximately 65 scientists from all over the world with cross-disciplinary expertise. In the System Integration and Physics Group, we perform cutting-edge research and look at various aspects of making the power system stronger, smarter and greener. We focus on the challenges and opportunities in enhancing grid flexibility and facilitating renewable energy transition. In this context, we offer an internship position which provides the opportunity of working on real-world projects in an international team of research scientists. The duration is 6 months, with the possibility of further extension.
How you'll make an impact

Develop data exchange between an existing MATLAB optimization tool and an external LCA engine

Analyze the environmental metrics and trade-offs of power electronics components design

Document the workflow and support automation of repeated runs

Collaborate with experts in a multi-disciplinary research team

Present progress updates and results, and write technical reports

Contribute to scientific publications
Your background
-
Currently pursuing an MSc degree in software engineering, data science, environmental engineering, materials science, chemistry, physics, electrical/mechanical engineering, or a similar subject – official enrolment is essential

Programming experience (e.g. working with parametric data, automating workflows, integrating external tools)

Knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment basics (ISO 14040/44) and interest in environmental sustainability

Experience in Python and Python-based LCA modelling (e.g. Brightway, OpenLCA API) is a plus

Proficiency in English, both written and spoken

Enthusiastic, motivated and curious team player with good organizational skills
