Experimental Animal Center (EAC)
Breeding Animal Husbandry
Start of employment: immediately or by arrangement
The position is initially limited to 1 year with the option of extension.
The laboratory animal facilities of the Experimental Animal Center (EAC) breed and keep rodents, rabbits, and fish for the biomedical research of the University of Bern in compliance with legal and ethical guidelines and regulations, the 3R (Reduce, Refine, Replace) principle, and the "Culture of Care".
Tasks
• Professional care of laboratory animals in the EAC animal facilities
• Ensuring a smooth and efficient workflow for the users
• Planning and coordination of breeding genetically modified laboratory animals
• Ensuring and monitoring hygiene status
• Administrative management of the animal inventory and animal monitoring
• Technical co-responsibility for the equipment and infrastructure in operation and maintenance of animal husbandry
• Performing specific services (e.g., taking skin biopsies for genotyping)
• Cleaning of materials, equipment, and rooms according to applicable hygiene regulations
• Assistance with goods receipt and inventory management
• Willingness to work in animal care service on weekends and public holidays
Requirements
• Completed vocational training in animal care, focus on laboratory animals
• Experience with mice in a laboratory animal context
• Several years of professional experience in laboratory animal care
• Training in laboratory animal science (at least LTK module 1 or equivalent)
• IT skills
• Knowledge of animal management programs (especially PyRat) is an advantage
• English spoken and written, oral German skills are an advantage
• Reliable, resilient personality with quick comprehension and structured, efficient working style
• Teamwork skills, flexibility, and a communicative working style
