Our department Engineering Structures at Empa in Dübendorf develops innovative solutions aimed at reducing material consumption, increasing the degree of material reuse, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and preparing the built environment for extreme events. The laboratory conducts research projects on novel building materials and systems, condition assessments and reinforcement techniques, digital manufacturing, and timber construction to improve the safety, usability, durability, robustness, and sustainability of structures. The laboratory has excellent infrastructure for experimental research, is accredited according to ISO/IEC 17025 for static and fatigue testing, and is equipped with a unique laboratory hall for large-scale tests.
Your tasks
As a civil engineer, you are part of our laboratory team and are responsible for the following tasks:
- Planning and implementation of test setups in collaboration with researchers and technicians in accordance with international standards or test specifications
- Conducting mechanical tests including data acquisition and evaluation
- Further development and implementation of internal guidelines regarding safety and quality management or accreditation (e.g., work instructions, safety regulations, etc.)
- Assisting in the planning and execution of maintenance of laboratory equipment as well as electrical and hydraulic machines and units
- Monitoring and calibration of measurement sensors
- Supporting students, laboratory staff, and scientific employees with experiments and technical questions
Your profile
For these varied and exciting tasks, we are looking for a committed personality with a practice-oriented education who enthusiastically contributes to our international, dynamic environment and possesses the following qualities:
- Completed studies (FH/ETH) in civil engineering, ideally with prior vocational training in the construction industry, e.g., as a mason, carpenter, or similar
- Several years of practical experience in the structural field/engineering office and ideally knowledge of mechanical testing methods and specialization in materials mechanics
- Solid computer user skills (MS Office, CAD, structural analysis and FE programs)
- Interest in taking on leadership responsibility in the team, tackling new tasks, and acquiring necessary additional expertise
- High problem-solving skills and a structured way of working
- Open and communicative personality who enjoys working in a multidisciplinary and international environment
- Good oral and written knowledge of German and English
