The Department of Surgery provides 24/7 care for patients, both elective and emergency cases requiring surgical intervention. It represents a centre of excellence, not only Swiss but also European, in several fields and surgical specialties.

Within this department, hand and peripheral nerve surgery is attached to the Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Traumatology Service and constitutes the largest centre of its kind in Switzerland. It offers cutting-edge care covering all areas of reconstructive orthopaedic surgery and adult traumatology, including complex and highly specialised cases. The service performs more than 6,500 surgical procedures annually and provides approximately 45,000 consultations. It relies on a multidisciplinary approach, high-level infrastructure, and strong involvement in university teaching and clinical research.

This position is newly created and is part of the ALTER deployment aimed at ensuring compliance of work organisation with the Labour Law (LTr).

Job Description

As a head of clinic holding a specialist title in orthopaedic surgery, you will join the hand surgery unit as part of a specialisation. The unit provides 24/7 emergency care for hand and wrist injuries across the canton of Geneva (treatment of wounds, wrist or finger fractures, etc.) as well as dedicated consultations for various pathologies such as hand osteoarthritis, carpal tunnel syndrome, tendinitis, and more.

In this role, you will carry out a full clinical activity, including surgical interventions and inpatient care. You will also actively contribute to the unit’s projects.

You demonstrate rigour, clinical acumen, and strong analytical skills in managing sometimes complex situations, including short-term complication management. Thanks to your organisational skills and ability to prioritise, you efficiently manage your clinical duties while responding to multiple demands (patients, phone calls, correspondence, meetings).

You work in a demanding environment at the interface of care, teaching, and research. In this capacity, you collaborate closely with the entire medical and nursing team and ensure clear, smooth, and respectful communication with both colleagues and patients, adapting your language to their level of understanding.

Relying on your team spirit, you show solidarity in the face of unforeseen events and heavy workloads. As a head of clinic, you actively participate in supervising and training junior doctors, adopting a mentoring role and sharing your expertise.

You take part in the on-call duties of the hand surgery unit.

The clinical activity is part of a structured and demanding postgraduate training pathway aimed at specialisation in hand surgery. This environment offers recognised development opportunities, including high-level practical and theoretical training, notably through collaborations with the SFITS (Swiss Foundation for Innovation and Training in Surgery).

Qualifications

You hold a federal medical diploma or have training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO).

You hold an FMH title in orthopaedic surgery or FMH in hand surgery, or an equivalent title recognised by MEBEKO, and possess or are able to obtain the cantonal practice licence before starting your position from the Geneva cantonal doctor.

You have proven experience in hand surgery allowing you to be autonomous and wish to specialise in hand surgery. Your previous experience is ideally gained in a university environment with a high volume of activity.

For non-French speakers, a C1 level in spoken and written French is required.

You have excellent communication skills within a multidisciplinary team and with patients, are dynamic, flexible, committed, and discreet. Additionally, you have demonstrated strong adaptability.
