The Surgery Department provides care for patients 24/7, both elective and emergency cases requiring surgical intervention. It represents a centre of excellence, not only Swiss but also European in several fields and in many of its surgical specialties.

Within this department, the Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma Service is the largest centre of its kind in Switzerland. It offers cutting-edge care covering all areas of reconstructive orthopaedic surgery and adult trauma, including complex and highly specialised cases. The service performs more than 6,500 surgical interventions each year and provides approximately 45,000 consultations. It relies on a multidisciplinary approach, high-level infrastructure, and strong involvement in university teaching and clinical research.

This position is newly created and is part of the ALTER deployment aimed at ensuring compliance of work organisation with the Labour Law (LTr).

Job Description

As an internal medicine physician in orthopaedics, with a dedicated activity in perioperative medicine, you contribute to the overall care of patients hospitalised in the orthopaedics service. In this context, you work in the five units of this service, details of which can be found via the following link: Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma . This position is particularly aimed at physicians wishing to develop their skills in internal medicine within a surgical and interdisciplinary environment. The activity is mainly organised from Monday to Friday, according to the needs and organisation of the service.

Under the supervision of senior physicians, you ensure the daily medical follow-up of the patients entrusted to you. Your activity includes preoperative optimisation, medical management during hospitalisation, and postoperative follow-up, as well as prevention, identification, and treatment of perioperative complications.

You manage all issues encountered on the ward, including pain management, anticoagulant treatment management, hydro-electrolytic disorders, common biological abnormalities, acute or chronic comorbidities, and discharge planning. You coordinate these care processes with the orthopaedics, anaesthesiology, nursing, physiotherapy teams, and other involved specialists.

You participate in medical rounds, interdisciplinary discussions, medical record keeping, and continuous improvement of care quality and safety. You develop your clinical reasoning by facing varied, sometimes complex perioperative situations, while benefiting from close supervision.

Within a university and multidisciplinary environment, you also participate in the supervision of trainee physicians and have access to theoretical and practical training offered by the general internal medicine and orthopaedics services.

As such, you continue your postgraduate training in accordance with FMH requirements. The year completed is recognised as a postgraduate training year in orthopaedics and can be counted towards the curriculum leading to the FMH specialist title in general internal medicine.

Qualifications

You hold the federal medical diploma or have training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO) and have initial experience as an internal medicine physician. You demonstrate a strong interest in the field of orthopaedic surgery.

You have perfect command of the French language (C1 level required) and very good written and oral communication skills.

Possessing excellent communication skills within a multidisciplinary team and with patients, you are a dynamic, flexible, and committed person. Moreover, you have demonstrated strong adaptability skills.

You can work both day shifts and night and weekend shifts.
