Identitas AG was founded in 1999 to establish and operate the Swiss animal movement database. Through the continuous expansion of its range of services, the company has grown to its current size of 110 employees. Identitas AG is privately organised and is based in Bern. The Swiss Confederation is the majority shareholder alongside 17 organisations from production and processing.

The core business is the development and operation of industry-specific, database-based IT solutions for the purpose of mass identification and traceability of animals and foodstuffs. In addition, applications and registers with personal data are developed and mandates on behalf of third parties are carried out. Furthermore, support, logistics and financial services are offered, among others. In addition to the Swiss Confederation, especially the Federal Offices for Agriculture (FOAG) and for Food Safety and Veterinary Affairs (FSVO) as well as all cantons, Identitas AG counts both major food retail chains and all important organisations in livestock production and utilisation, right up to veterinarians, among its customers. For the registration of pets, Identitas AG ensures the establishment, operation and further development of complete applications.

Identitas AG sees itself as a modern IT service provider that, with the involvement of its customer groups, develops economically sensible and innovative products and contributes to joint success in long-term partnerships.

The mandate of Identitas AG is based on an ordinance issued by the Swiss Federal Council.
