Internship Avalanche Warning Service 100% (m/f/d) – Focus on Data and Models

The Avalanche and Prevention research unit studies the formation and dynamics of avalanches, develops and operates prevention and early warning systems for alpine natural hazards, and offers a 6-month internship for the upcoming winter season 2026/2027

You will support us in further developing our forecast models by contributing your skills and ideas in data preparation and analysis as well as model validation. In addition, your varied tasks will include fieldwork such as snow profile measurements, supporting the writing of AvaBlogs and social media posts, and avalanche mapping. You will also be involved in conducting snow and avalanche courses. If needed, you will support other teams and take on diverse tasks at the institute.

You have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Data Science or a scientific discipline and a strong interest in data analysis and modelling. Good knowledge of Python (or R) is required. You bring experience in assessing avalanche danger – for example through regular touring activities, as a tour leader, J+S leader, or through your own ski tours – and are confident moving in terrain on skis (or splitboard). Your working style is independent, precise, and reliable. Flexibility and willingness to occasionally work at weekends complete your profile. Knowledge of another national language (French, Italian) is an advantage.
