Company Description
With more than 13,000 employees representing 160 professions, the University Hospitals of Geneva are a nationally and internationally recognised institution. To learn more about our institution, take a few minutes to consult our 2025 retrospective by clicking here.
With nearly 1,000 employees, the Department of Psychiatry fulfils a triple mission covering the treatment of mental disorders, education and research. The department’s mission is to detect and effectively treat increasingly frequent and diverse pathologies while respecting patients and their relatives.
Quality teaching is also provided by the department to students as well as to doctors in training for specialist certification, raising awareness of psychological, biological and social dimensions. The department also supports quality training in psychotherapy.
Finally, the department seeks to understand the origins of mental disorders through cognitive and affective neurosciences, a true flagship of the Geneva site. To this end, it conducts patient-oriented academic and clinical research of a high standard.
The geriatric psychiatry service at HUG is the largest university institution in Switzerland for the care of psychiatric illnesses in older people. A particular feature is the offer of an integrated postgraduate training programme in psychiatry and psychotherapy of the elderly, which also takes into account neurology as well as physical medicine and neurological rehabilitation.
Job Description
In response to growing demand linked to the demographic evolution of older people and our commitment in the field of diagnosis and treatment of cognitive disorders and dementias, the Dementia Treatment and Prevention Unit (UTPD) of the Geriatric Psychiatry Service (SPG) is expanding and recruiting an assistant physician to work in tandem with the assistant physician responsible for the unit.
You ensure the quality of the unit’s medical services and intervene in an integrative and holistic clinical care approach to relieve older people by establishing a diagnosis and precise assessment of each patient, developing and using the best available treatments by studying the scientific basis and health service administration for older people in close collaboration with caregivers, medico-social establishments (EMS), doctors from other specialties, notably geriatrics and neurology, private family practice doctors and community health workers.
You also participate in intensified and personalised psychotherapeutic intervention for patients, including within a special programme for people suffering from mild cognitive impairment. You work within a team of about 50 people including specialists in psychiatry and neurology, nurses, clinical psychologists and secretaries.
You contribute to the establishment of research projects aimed at enabling early identification of dementia and links with other somatic pathologies. You also contribute to pre- and postgraduate teaching. We are available to support you in your academic development efforts.
Qualifications
You hold the federal medical diploma or training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO).
You possess a FMH title in psychiatry and psychotherapy or neurology FMH, or an equivalent recognised by MEBEKO. You are interested in innovative, comprehensive and integrative approaches aimed at mitigating the effects of mental and somatic disorders in people with cognitive diseases and dementia.
Ideally, you already have experience in the care of older people, including typical comorbidities of old age. Ideally, you have already completed your university doctoral thesis or are about to do so.
You find it easy to work in a network and collaborate with doctors from other specialties, enabling early and interdisciplinary management of the most diverse clinical manifestations in people with dementia. It is essential to be ready to work in a team, be flexible regarding clinical activities and supervise doctors in postgraduate training.
Your natural ability to mobilise a team, your open-mindedness and your capacity to support young doctors in their practice are undeniable assets for thriving in this position. You also know how to adjust services to growing demands and have the ease to work autonomously and spontaneously call on colleagues from other professions to benefit from their expertise in patient care.
For non-French speakers, a C1 level in spoken and written French is required.
