Construction work for our new operations building has begun, uncovering one of the oldest archaeological sites in the canton area.

The groundbreaking for the new operations building of Rhiienergie AG in the "Wasserschmitten" area in Tamins has taken place. Together with Von Ballmoos Krucker Architects and Fanzun AG, rhiienergie recently ceremoniously commenced the construction work. "The new operations building enables us to provide customer-friendly service and efficient processes in the best location in Tamins," says Christian Capaul, Managing Director of Rhiienergie AG.

Soon after construction began, settlement traces were found that can very likely be dated to the Neolithic period around 3000 BC. According to the Archaeological Service of Graubünden, the new site would thus be one of the oldest sites in the entire canton of Graubünden.

The demolition work of the existing buildings was carried out by Käppeli Chur. Implenia is responsible for the excavation, and the structural work is being carried out by Mettler / Prader. The new operations building is expected to be ready for occupancy in August 2019.

The new operations building fulfils the central aspects concerning the overall local architectural impact and address formation, operational functionality, as well as external and internal access. Furthermore, the new building can be constructed cost-effectively and is economical in operation and maintenance. The progressive and sustainable energy concept of the new building project also corresponds to the sustainable orientation of rhiienergie.

Because the existing operations building on Reichenauerstrasse in Tamins no longer meets the requirements for current space needs, as well as for construction and energy-technical reasons, rhiienergie decided in 2016 to build a new building. This was followed by an anonymous project competition for the new operations building, its access and parking, as well as the redesign of the surroundings. 66 architectural teams applied to participate in the competition, of which 16 were admitted to submit a project proposal after prequalification. The anonymously conducted competition was won by the project "Bernstein" by Von Ballmoos Krucker Architects AG from Zurich. Fanzun AG from Chur acted as specialist planners in this team.
