About the job
The Faculty of Law is one of the oldest of the seven faculties at the University of Basel. It encompasses teaching, research and services in the field of law. It has around 250 staff members and over 1,200 students. The Faculty of Law at the University of Basel is offering a one-year start-up scholarship of CHF 30,000 within the doctoral programme "Law in Transition".
Your Tasks
Start-up scholarships allow doctoral candidates to prepare a funding application during the initial phase of their doctorate in order to apply for further financing of their project from the Swiss National Science Foundation or another institution. Within the framework of the doctoral programme, doctoral candidates write a dissertation within a period of three years. The training module is completed after three years with 18 credit points.

- Technical Change: In the research area "Technical Change", the current topics include biotechnology, life sciences law, data governance, artificial intelligence, law & robots and blockchain, medical progress as a civil law challenge, and the legal framework conditions of medical progress. Topics from these areas and related research questions are welcome.
- Social Change: In particular, globalization, digitalisation, migration and religious pluralisation have set in motion profound social change processes that also have a significant impact on the law. The research area "Social Change" covers questions that require legal scientific reflection and analysis in this context.
- Economic Change: Economic change is also affected by globalization. This leads to new questions: data protection, transparency and accountability, Swiss business law and its relationship to European business law, internationalisation of public business law and the influence of International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) are topics that require in-depth treatment.
Your Profile
- Master's or licentiate degree from a Faculty of Law in Switzerland or an equivalent diploma from a recognised foreign university. Average grade of at least 5.0 according to the Swiss grading system or an equivalent foreign degree. For candidates who are about to complete their studies or who come from other disciplines, the doctoral committee decides on the final admission and associated conditions after consultation with the prospective primary supervisor.
- Existence of a supervision commitment
- The period between university graduation or state examination and application should generally not exceed two years.
- An above-average motivation for scientific engagement with the research question and willingness to work interdisciplinarily is expected.
- Passive knowledge of English and German is required.
