The Surgery Department provides care for patients 24/7, both elective and emergency cases requiring surgical intervention. It represents a centre of excellence, not only Swiss but also European in several fields and in many of its surgical specialties.

Within this department, the Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma Service is the largest centre of its kind in Switzerland. It offers cutting-edge care covering all areas of reconstructive orthopaedic surgery and adult trauma, including complex and highly specialised cases. The service performs more than 6,500 surgical interventions each year and provides approximately 45,000 consultations. It relies on a multidisciplinary approach, high-level infrastructure, and strong involvement in university teaching and clinical research.

This position is newly created and is part of the ALTER deployment aimed at ensuring compliance of work organisation with the Labour Law (LTr).

Job Description

As a head of clinic holding a specialist title in general internal medicine, you will join the perioperative medicine team of the Orthopaedic Surgery and Musculoskeletal Trauma Service. You will contribute to the overall medical care of patients hospitalised in the various units of the service.

In close collaboration with surgical, anaesthesiology, nursing teams and other involved professionals, you will ensure the assessment, optimisation, and follow-up of patients presenting with comorbidities or perioperative medical issues.

Your clinical activity notably includes preoperative medical evaluation, optimisation of acute and chronic pathologies that may influence operative risk or recovery, as well as prevention, identification, and management of postoperative complications. You participate in interdisciplinary rounds and coordinate diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in connection with attending physicians and the relevant teams.

You supervise junior doctors in their daily activities, support their clinical reasoning, and actively contribute to their training. You ensure the quality of medical documentation, continuity of care, and coordination of the patients’ hospital pathway.

Thanks to your clinical sense, prioritisation skills, and autonomy, you manage varied, sometimes complex situations in a demanding and interdisciplinary hospital environment. You maintain clear and constructive communication with medical and nursing teams, patients, and their relatives.

You also participate in the development and structuring of perioperative medicine activities in orthopaedics, as well as quality improvement projects, teaching, and, depending on opportunities, clinical research.

The activity is mainly organised from Monday to Friday, according to the needs and functioning of the service.

Qualifications

You hold a federal medical diploma or have training deemed equivalent by the Medical Professions Commission of the Federal Office of Public Health (MEBEKO).
 
You hold an FMH title in general internal medicine or have an equivalent title recognised by MEBEKO and possess the cantonal practice right or are able to obtain it before starting your position from the Geneva cantonal doctor.
 
You have proven experience in internal medicine allowing you to be autonomous. Your previous experience is ideally gained in a university environment with a high volume of activity.
 
For non-French speakers, a C1 level in spoken and written French is required.
 
You have excellent communication skills within multidisciplinary teams and with patients, you are dynamic, flexible, committed, and demonstrate discretion. Moreover, you have shown strong adaptability skills.
