About the job
Rahma walks to the measuring tape on the wall of Ursula "Uschi" B.’s flat and points to a small mark. That was where she was measured for the first time. Since that day, the 9-year-old has been regularly visiting Uschi and has gained not only a few centimetres but also an important reference person.
What began as careful mediation in the "right among us" programme of the Baselland Red Cross has long since become a close relationship. Rahma lives with her single mother and three siblings in the Basel region. When Uschi picks her up from school every fortnight, she looks forward to the blue car pulling up each time. Together they play, do puzzles, paint, or explore nature. Sometimes they visit the goats, sometimes the forest. Often the most beautiful moments happen quite spontaneously.
Together they attend regional events, the zoo in Basel, or children’s activities. In the process, she improves her German skills.
This is exactly the aim of "right among us": children from families with migration backgrounds regularly spend time with a voluntarily engaged person or family, opening up new experiences for them.
For the retired researcher who previously worked at the University Hospital Basel, the commitment is not a one-way street. She has no children of her own. All the more, she enjoys the time spent with Rahma. "It is very enriching," she says. "We have trusted each other from the very beginning."
Currently, 13 children like Rahma are waiting in the Basel region for someone who wants to give them time. The Baselland Red Cross is looking for more individuals and families who want to make an important contribution to a child’s social participation.
