eMediplan: How KISIM Advances Medication Safety in Switzerland

What began in 2022 with a single hospital is now a success story: Over 20,000 eMediplans are created monthly in KISIM – and the trend is rising. Soon, the eMediplan could even become legally mandatory.

On the occasion of this year’s IG eMediplan general meeting, we at CISTEC were able to provide an insight into our work – and the results are worth sharing. Because the eMediplan concerns something that affects us all: the safety of patients during medication.

What is the eMediplan?

The eMediplan is a nationwide standardised document in Switzerland that clearly presents a patient’s complete medication – in text and image. It contains dosages, understandable intake instructions, and a QR code for digital scanning. This prevents errors and facilitates collaboration between hospitals, medical practices, and pharmacies. The standard is defined and promoted by the IG eMediplan, an association founded in 2015, of which CISTEC has been a member for about four years.

From one hospital to over 20,000 eMediplans per month

In May 2022, the eMediplan integrated into KISIM went live for the first time at the Baden Cantonal Hospital (KSB). Since then, more hospitals have continuously joined – now there are already 14 hospitals. Image 1 impressively shows this development: Across all KISIM hospitals, more than 20,000 eMediplans are currently created per month. Image 2 details how this total is distributed among individual hospitals with their respective launch dates. A particularly significant boost came with the go-live of the St. Gallen Cantonal Hospital in the second half of 2025.

Where do we stand geographically?

Image 3 shows the distribution on the Swiss map: The blue dots mark locations with active eMediplan production. Testing is currently underway in Biel, Thurgau, and Zug (orange), while the USZ and Schaffhausen have requested the eMediplan (red). The eMediplan will be introduced at the Clara and Fribourg hospitals with the next go-live (light blue). Furthermore, we see additional potential with existing customers (green) and planned introductions in various rehabilitation clinics (light green).

Switching from existing dosage cards to the eMediplan requires targeted support for existing customers. For new customers, integration is much simpler – but careful introduction is also important here. Hospitals particularly benefit when data is automatically transferred via QR code import – errors from manual typing are avoided and staff are significantly relieved.

Support from politics

A particularly exciting development comes from the federal government: As part of the partial revision of the Therapeutic Products Act (HMG 3a), the Federal Council submitted a draft to Parliament in September 2025 that makes e-prescriptions and the eMediplan mandatory – regardless of whether patients have an electronic patient record (EPD). On 12 March 2026, the National Council approved this revision by a clear majority (128 to 62 votes). The draft is currently in the reconciliation process – next, the National Council will be involved again.

Conclusion

The rollout so far has been voluntary for hospitals – which makes it all the more pleasing that we are already so widely established today. With the foreseeable legal anchoring, the eMediplan will become a fixed part of the Swiss healthcare system. KISIM is ready.
