Mirjam Spengeler
- I have been employed as a geneticist at Qualitas since 2017. However, two years earlier I had already conducted my postdoctoral project at HAFL in collaboration with Qualitas and had already worked in Zug.
- Originally, I studied biology and completed a Master’s in Molecular Life Sciences at the University of Bern in 2012. My master’s thesis was already about SNP data, focusing on dwarfism in Labrador Retrievers.
- For my PhD at the University of Bern, I switched from dogs to horses and from SNP chip data to sequence data. Through this project, I also became familiar with breeding value estimation and breeding values.
- In 2015, the opportunity arose to take on a postdoctoral position from HAFL. The Swiss LowInput Genetics project, abbreviated as SLIG. For this project, I was already given an office space in Zug at Qualitas and was eventually able to stay at Qualitas when the project ended.
- I find the work in breeding value estimation very exciting. I was able to familiarise myself with various areas and take on diverse tasks. I appreciate that I can organise my work flexibly and enjoy the exchange with the team.
- I live with my husband on a small farm in the Lucerne hinterland. Besides suckler cows and pigs, we also have some alpacas, a pair of peacocks, and a few chickens. I received our first Appenzeller beard chickens as a farewell gift from my work at HAFL. During the summer months, we also rear silkworms. This branch of the farm is particularly exciting, and I am on the board of the Swiss Silk association, for example in "small farms".
