The Botanical Garden of the University of Basel, founded in 1589, is a service operation of the University of Basel. In the greenhouses and outdoor facilities of the garden, over 7000 plant species from almost all world regions and climate zones are cultivated and shown to a wide audience. The collection serves public relations, teaching, research, and species conservation. For the public, it is an important green oasis in the middle of the city. Basel is a historic city on the Rhine in the northwest of Switzerland, close to the borders with France and Germany.

Your Tasks
Main area: Horticultural maintenance of the tropical plant collection of the cloud forest house and the extensive orchid collection. Cultivation management of the plants in the three propagation greenhouses. Expansion and presentation of the plant collection.

- Propagation of tropical plants and their care
- Maintenance of the database, labelling and administration of the international seed exchange
- Maintenance of technical facilities, management of the materials store and manual work
- Support of botanical researchers in experiments and teaching
- Assistance with public relations
- Weekend and public holiday duties, on-call duty (approx. 10 per year)
- Supervision of civilian service personnel
- Additional tasks depending on suitability, e.g. guided tours for the public
Your Profile
You have completed vocational training as a gardener and possess solid, versatile horticultural experience with various ornamental plants, tropical plants and orchids. It is important to you to share your interest in botany and your joy of plants with the garden visitors, students and staff of the botany department. Furthermore, we expect:
- Independent working style and ability to work in a team
- Driving licence category B
- Basic knowledge of PC applications (Word, databases, internet, etc.)
- Willingness and motivation for professional development
We Offer You
A varied and independent activity in a motivated team of eight employees in a wonderful garden facility in an urban environment at the University of Basel. Opportunities for further training in botany and botanical gardens. The employment rate is 100% and initially limited to one year, with the option of extension/permanent contract. Remuneration is based on qualifications and experience according to the salary scale of the University of Basel. The position starts on 1 November 2026 or by arrangement.
