The Office for Municipalities and Citizenship includes the general and financial supervision of municipalities and the land registry, the implementation of the cantonal financial equalization, the support of municipal merger projects, the processing of naturalizations in coordination with the municipalities and the federal government, the execution of name change and adoption procedures, as well as the implementation of overarching tasks in civil status matters. The five-member team of the Citizenship and Name Changes department processes and reviews naturalization applications in the ordinary and facilitated procedures as well as re-naturalizations and renunciations of citizenship from cantonal and Swiss citizenship. The formal legal review and the preparation of orders for name changes are another task of the department.
