Lawyer or Jurist for the Competence Center «Law and Poverty», 50-100% in Fribourg (m/f/d)
The Competence Center «Law and Poverty» is committed to fighting poverty by legally supporting specialist offices on the topics of debt and social assistance. The team members close gaps and support professionals in specific questions so that people affected by or threatened by poverty can know and assert their rights.
As a lawyer or jurist, you ensure professional and qualified legal advice for the regional Caritas organizations and the members of the umbrella organization Debt Counseling Switzerland. You professionally and punctually handle complex legal cases (debt enforcement law, social assistance, and social insurance) and represent clients in court if necessary.
Your tasks
- Handling legal questions from debtor and social counseling centers by phone and in writing (e.g., Debt Enforcement and Bankruptcy Act, Consumer Credit Act, contract law, social insurance law, tax law, social assistance law, etc.)
- Drafting letters, objections, complaints, etc. on behalf of counseling centers, debtors, or insured persons
- In certain cases, legal representation of clients in negotiations and/or administrative and court proceedings
- Participation and collaboration in training sessions and regional expert exchanges in the areas of debt, social assistance, and social insurance
- Occasional development of legal bases for political-legal statements as well as drafting legal opinions (including consultations) in the field of poverty reduction
- Monitoring practice, case law, and doctrine in the relevant legal areas
- Working with the media and responding to media inquiries on the topic of poverty (debt, social security, etc.) from a legal perspective
Our requirements
- Degree in law, lawyer’s license is an advantage
- Practical experience in the area of debt and ideally in counseling activities
- Knowledge in the areas of Debt Enforcement and Bankruptcy Act, Consumer Credit Act, social insurance, tax law, or related legal fields
- Ability and enjoyment in explaining legal matters understandably to laypeople and showing solutions
- Analytical, pragmatic, and solution-oriented thinking and acting
- Good planning and coordination skills, high degree of personal responsibility
- Enjoyment and experience in working with various partners and interest groups
- Confident communication in French and German; ability to navigate a bilingual work environment; knowledge of Italian is an advantage
